The short answer: Build this trip around two different kinds of evidence. Rio Branco gives you the state institutions, riverfront, and public collections that explain Acre's political and economic history. Xapuri gives that history a human scale through the places associated with Chico Mendes, rubber tappers, and forest livelihoods. Keep at least one full day in each place, confirm every museum opening directly, and treat the road journey between them as a real travel day rather than spare time.

Decide what you want the route to explain
The useful question is not how many landmarks fit into a day. Decide which story you want to follow before choosing stops. Three strands run through this route:
- the border settlement and political formation of Acre;
- the rubber economy and the movement of workers into the region;
- the later organization of rubber tappers around land, labor, and forest protection.
Rio Branco is better for the first two because its public buildings, museums, and central riverfront provide a state-level sequence. Xapuri is essential for the third. The municipal tourism page identifies the Casa de Chico Mendes and other local cultural sites, while Iphan records the house and its collection as federally protected heritage. Those sources establish why Xapuri belongs in the route, but neither replaces a current opening confirmation.
Write one question beside every proposed stop. A palace might answer how the state represented itself. A rubber museum might explain labor, trade, or migration. A memorial can show how a national figure is interpreted in the town where he lived. If two venues answer the same question and time is tight, choose the one with the clearer current visitor information.
Give Rio Branco a chronological order
Start the city portion with context rather than attempting a random loop of photographed buildings. The Acre state tourism portal identifies Palácio Rio Branco, the geoglyphs, Xapuri, and other places as parts of the state's visitor offering. In central Rio Branco, use the river and the surviving civic area to orient yourself before entering collections.
A practical sequence begins around the Gameleira and the Acre River, then moves to a currently open history institution such as Palácio Rio Branco or Museu da Borracha. The exact order should follow verified opening periods, shade, and transport, not a fixed list copied from an old itinerary. Public institutions can close for maintenance, holidays, events, or collection work.
Before leaving the hotel, check four details on an official channel:
- whether the building is receiving visitors that day;
- whether entry is independent or accompanied;
- the last admission period rather than only the closing time;
- whether photography, bags, or identification have special conditions.
Allow time to read labels. Acre's history involves Indigenous peoples, Bolivian and Brazilian territorial claims, migration, extractive labor, and state-building. A rushed visit that collects façades can flatten those subjects into a single heroic story. When an exhibition supplies a date or interpretation that matters to you, photograph the label if permitted or note the institution and gallery for later reference.
Treat the journey to Xapuri as part of the plan
Xapuri's municipal "Como chegar" page describes road access from Rio Branco by the BR-317 and lists several transport forms. Timetables and operators can change, so use that page as route orientation and confirm the actual service through the operator's current official channel. Record the departure point, arrival point, luggage conditions, payment method, and the return option before you leave Rio Branco.
Do not make a time-sensitive flight connection on the same day as an unverified return from Xapuri. A more resilient structure is to sleep in Xapuri, give the town a full useful day, and return to Rio Branco with margin before the next fixed departure. If your schedule only permits a day trip, verify the last dependable return first and work backward.
The road also changes the scale of the story. Rio Branco's institutions explain regional systems; Xapuri's wooden buildings, river setting, and compact center place some of those systems in an individual town. That contrast is the point of moving between them.
Read Xapuri beyond a single biography
The Casa de Chico Mendes is the anchor, not the entire subject. Iphan's Acre heritage page says the house and its collection were the state's first federal listing, while the Xapuri municipality describes it as a memorial with household objects and documents. Visit it with two sets of questions: what does the collection show about Chico Mendes, and what does the building show about ordinary domestic life in the town?
Then connect the memorial to public spaces in Xapuri. The municipal tourism inventory includes the river edge, Igreja de São Sebastião, and other local heritage references. Current access varies. Ask the municipal tourism office which sites are open and whether any visit outside the urban center needs prior arrangement, a local host, or a guide.
Descriptions of extractive communities require care. A working community is not an outdoor museum. Before booking a forest-livelihood visit, ask who invited visitors, who leads the activity, how payment reaches the hosts, what may be photographed, and whether the visit conflicts with work, community events, river conditions, or fire restrictions. Do not enter a settlement because a map pin or an old blog calls it an attraction.
Build a two-base schedule without overfilling it
A four-night version gives the route enough breathing room:

Choose the fourth night according to the next departure. Sleeping again in Rio Branco is safer when an early flight follows. Staying in Xapuri makes sense when the next day is flexible and you have a confirmed visit that deserves more time.
Do not add Serra do Divisor to this route. It uses another gateway and needs independent expedition planning. The geoglyphs also require their own access research because known sites may be on private land or subject to preservation controls. Leaving them out keeps this article's promise clear: a coherent Rio Branco and Xapuri history journey.
