The short answer: Choose Serra da Capivara for an archaeology and Caatinga trip based around São Raimundo Nonato. Choose the Parnaíba Delta for a river, mangrove, island, and coast trip based around Parnaíba or Ilha Grande. They sit in different parts of Piauí and require different gateways. Combining them is a multi-region journey, not a small extension.

Choose Serra da Capivara for archaeology and dryland walking
Serra da Capivara works when rock art, archaeology, landscape interpretation, and the Caatinga are the main purpose of the trip. São Raimundo Nonato is the planning base, but the park covers a wider area and its visitor circuits are not an urban walking tour.
An ICMBio 2025 authorization notice for park conductors states that park visits use guided trails and routes, and describes archaeological sites, rock paintings and engravings, wildlife, vegetation, visitor centers, and support gates. Use the current park channel to confirm how that system operates on your dates, then hire a conductor whose authorization is valid for the intended activity.
Ask the conductor to build the day around interests and physical limits rather than copying the longest circuit. Record the named sector, road movement, walking surfaces, steps or platforms, sun exposure, meals, water, bathroom opportunities, and return. A list of archaeological sites is not a usable schedule until those movements fit.
Keep museums as planned parts of the route, not emergency filler. Check their current operators, closed days, admission, and transport from the accommodation. A museum and a park circuit can complement one another, but they may not share the same ticket or schedule.
Choose the delta for water-based exploration
The Delta do Parnaíba route is organized around river and coastal access. Parnaíba is a practical service base, while Ilha Grande and the Porto dos Tatus area may be relevant to a specific departure. Ask the boat operator to identify the port, route, islands or channels, vessel, boarding setup, duration, and return point.
ICMBio's Delta visitor information identifies Porto dos Tatus as a departure point for Delta visits. That confirms the importance of the departure area, not the conditions of any individual boat.
Before paying, verify:
- the provider's legal name and applicable tourism or navigation registration;
- passenger capacity and the safety equipment carried for each traveler;
- shade, seating, boarding assistance, and toilet information;
- wildlife-observation conduct and whether a sighting is only a possibility;
- weather, water, or access conditions that trigger rescheduling;
- what food, landings, and transfers are included.
Do not buy a wildlife guarantee. Follow the crew's distance and navigation rules, and never ask them to chase birds or other animals for a photograph. If a route enters a protected area, check its present rules through the responsible environmental authority.
Compare the gateways before the attractions
The Ministry of Tourism's current Northeast travel overview names Teresina and Parnaíba as air access points for Piauí and explains that onward travel to Serra da Capivara is by road. Live flights can change, so compare airport codes, operating dates, baggage, and the complete ground transfer.
For Serra da Capivara, write the route from the chosen airport or bus station to the São Raimundo Nonato accommodation and then to the park sectors. For the delta, write the route to Parnaíba, the boat's departure port, and the return. Do not compare only airfare. Add any overnight, road transfer, luggage charge, waiting, and missed-connection exposure.
A through bus or flight seen on a search screen is not confirmed until the operator sells it for the exact date. Keep an overnight if a delayed arrival would erase the next morning's guided park circuit or boat.
Know when combining both works
Combining the two regions can make sense on a longer Piauí journey, especially when the traveler values the contrast and accepts a substantial transfer between them. It does not make sense when each region receives only an arrival night and one rushed excursion.
Use this test. After inserting the connection, can each region keep at least one complete useful day plus its arrival and departure? Can the party recover if the interregional segment changes? Are the park conductor and boat bookings still inside their cancellation conditions?
If any answer is no, choose one region. The unused half is a good reason to return, not evidence that the first trip failed.
Travelers already following the Rota das Emoções may find the delta fits the coastal sequence with Maranhão and Ceará. That does not bring Serra da Capivara into the same corridor. Treat it as another route with another gateway.
Match the choice to effort and interests
Serra da Capivara involves road movement, open terrain, and walks whose difficulty depends on the selected circuit. Ask for an accessible or shorter route when needed, and verify exactly what accessible means at each site. Heat planning and water matter even on a vehicle-supported day.
The delta involves boarding, time on the water, possible spray and sun, and landings that vary by route. Ask about steps, docks, sand, and transfer assistance. Travelers prone to motion sickness should seek individual medical advice and discuss seating with the operator.
Both choices benefit from a lower-activity day. Around São Raimundo Nonato, that may be a confirmed museum visit. Around Parnaíba, it may be a city heritage block or a coast day with current bathing advice. Keep that block movable rather than forcing an outdoor booking in unsuitable conditions.
Use a final evidence check
For Serra da Capivara, save the authorized conductor, named circuit, park contacts, museum access, transport, and recovery day. For the delta, save the departure port, registered operator, vessel details, environmental rules, return, and weather terms.
