The short answer: Stay in one base, give Recife and Olinda separate daytime blocks, and move between them with a confirmed route. Recife Antigo is flatter and spread across islands and bridges. Olinda's protected center climbs and descends through historic streets. Trying to cover both in one hurried walk usually produces more transport and less understanding.

Choose one base from the evenings you want
Recife is the simpler base for airport access, a wider range of city districts, and travelers who want several museums or cultural venues. Olinda suits visitors who want to wake inside the protected center and accept its terrain and quieter late hours. Either can work, but confirm the trip back after dinner before booking.
Do not choose by a map pin alone. Check the street around the accommodation, building access, reception hours, parking if relevant, and the actual pickup point used by rides. During major festivals or street events, road closures and access controls can change the calculation. Use the official organizer's dated information for those periods.
If the party includes a wheelchair user, stroller, or someone who avoids steep grades, request a room and route description from the property. "Historic" and "accessible" describe different questions. Verify entrances, lifts, bathrooms, surfaces, and the vehicle drop-off separately.
Read Recife through connected districts
Start with Recife Antigo as one coherent block. Select a few venues around streets, squares, waterfront, and bridges that can be reached without crossing the city repeatedly. Then place other museums, markets, or cultural sites on their own district day.

Use that source for context, then check every venue with its present operator. A fort may now hold a museum, but the heritage page does not guarantee today's opening time or exhibition access. Search the current institutional page, record its date, and keep a substitute within the same district.
Boa Viagem and the southern waterfront form another block. Before entering the water, consult current local bathing and safety guidance. Do not transfer an old beach recommendation from a travel article into a same-day decision.
Treat Olinda as a hill route
Iphan describes Olinda's protected center as an urban ensemble with churches on hilltops, houses and gardens, and buildings from several periods. That spatial form is the reason to plan by elevation.
Begin from the confirmed drop-off and arrange the day so the party is not climbing the same hill repeatedly. Mark shaded pauses, open bathrooms, and a lunch that does not require a long detour. Ask a local guide or venue about the most suitable route for current street works and individual mobility needs.
Choose a small set of interiors rather than assuming every church and museum will be open. Religious buildings remain active spaces. Dress and behave accordingly, pause during services when visitors are not admitted, and ask before photographing people or ceremonies.

Move between the cities deliberately

For a bus, confirm the operator, direction, stop, service day, and payment method. For a taxi or app ride, set a recognizable pickup point before the phone loses charge or rain begins. If returning after a performance, ask the venue where drivers can legally stop and whether the surrounding streets remain accessible.
Keep the two city days flexible. Rain may make Olinda's slopes less comfortable, while a museum's closed day may favor switching the sequence. The accommodation base should allow that change without forfeiting another prepaid trip.
Add beaches only when the city pair is secure
Porto de Galinhas, Itamaracá, and other Pernambuco coastal areas are not neighborhoods of central Recife. Each needs its own movement, current marine conditions, and return. Fernando de Noronha is an entirely separate air and conservation plan.
For a short visit, protect Recife and Olinda first. Add one coastal base when the trip has enough nights to avoid repeated out-and-back travel. If a natural-pool outing is the reason for the extension, verify the local tide reference, authorized departure, vessel, and cancellation terms. A reef photograph does not identify the municipality or operating rules.

This structure leaves room to place meals and evening programs where they belong. It also prevents one delayed transfer from erasing the rest of the day.
