Pick one for a short visit. Add a second only after confirming the transfer and giving each base a useful day. A map does not show the river crossings, sand access, authorized vehicles, or seasonal water that shape this trip.

Start with the official access picture
The ICMBio visitor orientation page for Lençóis Maranhenses identifies Barreirinhas and Santo Amaro as principal access cities. It also notes other approaches and explains that São Luís is a common air gateway for the road journey. Read the page shortly before travel because it carries current park rules, operator guidance, contacts, and access notices.
Do not reduce "access" to reaching the town. Park outings generally continue with authorized local transport and walking. Ask the provider to name the circuit, pickup address, vehicle, and the part completed on foot. Confirm whether the quote covers only the park outing or also the journey from São Luís.
If arriving through Parnaíba or as part of the Rota das Emoções, treat that as a separate route with its own handoffs. A seller's package name does not prove that every segment is operated by the same company or protected if one leg changes.
Choose Barreirinhas for range and easier comparison
Barreirinhas is the practical first choice when travelers want to compare operators, combine a park circuit with the Preguiças River corridor, or keep more accommodation and transport options. The official orientation page describes the road approach from São Luís and names the city as a main access point.
Its advantage is flexibility, not instant dune access. Record the time between your accommodation, vehicle pickup, any river movement, and the start of the walk. If an excursion advertises several lagoons, ask whether those names refer to one current circuit and whether conditions make them accessible on your date.
Barreirinhas also works when the party has mixed interests. One person can choose a shorter authorized outing while another takes a longer walk, provided the pickup and return arrangements are clear. Families and travelers with mobility needs should ask for the vehicle step height, seating, shade, restroom availability, sand walking, and help that the operator can actually provide.
Choose Santo Amaro for park-focused time
Santo Amaro makes sense when the park is the main reason for the trip and the traveler prefers a smaller base with access to its western sectors. ICMBio's official orientation describes it as a principal gateway, while the agency's visitor-conductor manual distinguishes the Santo Amaro pole and explains that some attractions require walking because motorized access is not allowed in the primitive zone.
That distinction should shape the booking. A phrase such as "near the lagoons" says nothing about the effort required that day. Ask where the vehicle stops, how long the sand section is under current conditions, whether shade exists, and what happens if a traveler cannot complete the planned route.
Confirm the São Luís transfer in both directions. If the final night remains in Santo Amaro, do not connect it tightly to a flight. Road and local access conditions can change, and the useful safety margin belongs outside the operator's advertised drive time.
Choose Atins for a village and coastal stay
Atins is part of Barreirinhas municipality and sits near a park sector with beach, dunes, restinga, and seasonal water features, as described in the official conductor manual. It is a base, not just an item to attach to a Barreirinhas day.
Choose it when the village itself matters and when the accommodation, arrival, luggage movement, and onward journey all work. Ask whether access is by boat, road vehicle, or a combination on your exact date. Confirm the final drop-off because sand streets and changing landing points can make the last part different from an ordinary city transfer.
Do not assume Atins is the correct base for every named lagoon or crossing. Ask an authorized provider which park sector the proposed outing enters. Long crossings require a different level of preparation and should not be sold as an improvised upgrade after arrival.
Match the gateway to water and weather
The park is open year-round according to ICMBio, but the lagoon experience changes with rainfall and the annual water cycle. A promotional season label cannot confirm the condition of a specific lagoon. Ask the park or authorized operator what is accessible now and whether the proposed circuit is appropriate for the party.
Carry water and sun protection suitable for the planned walk. Confirm whether food and drinking water are available during the route rather than assuming a vehicle will carry supplies. Follow park instructions on waste, wildlife, plants, drones, swimming, fires, and motorized access.
Heavy rain can affect ground movement, while heat and exposed sand can change what a traveler can comfortably complete. Keep a shorter circuit or village day available. The trip should not depend on ignoring a local closure to preserve a photograph planned months earlier.
Use authorized services and verify their scope
ICMBio says it does not charge admission to the national park on the current orientation page, while authorized agencies and operators charge for their services. Treat those as different items. Ask for a written breakdown of transport, guide or conductor, circuit, meals, equipment, and cancellation conditions. Recheck the official page in case the access or charging structure changes after this review.
The same page advises visitors to use authorized providers, who should hold current identification and authorization. Ask to see the applicable credential. A marketplace review does not replace it.
If a trekking crossing is proposed, request the complete route, nights, food, water, communication, evacuation plan, and conductor status. The official manual describes multi-day crossings between tourist poles. That is evidence that such routes exist, not proof that a particular seller or departure is suitable.
Decide with a simple route test
Use Barreirinhas when flexibility and service range matter most. Use Santo Amaro when park time and its local sectors are the priority. Use Atins when the coastal village is part of the experience and its specific access is acceptable.
For fewer than several useful nights, resist changing bases. For a longer visit, add another gateway only if the transfer is confirmed and reveals a different park sector rather than repeating a sales label. Keep São Luís as a separate heritage stop, not an airport waiting room squeezed around the park.
Before payment, save the official park guidance, operator credentials, exact circuit, pickup and return, terrain notes, and recovery plan. Recheck them after any access notice and before the cancellation deadline.
