The short answer: Choose Curitiba for an urban base with eastern Paraná extensions. Choose Foz do Iguaçu when the national park and border region are the main purpose. Combine them only when you can treat the journey between the two as a real travel leg and still give each base at least one complete operating day.

Paraná's official tourism material divides the state into distinct regions. Curitiba sits in the east near the Serra do Mar and coast connections. Foz do Iguaçu belongs to the western border region shaped by the Iguaçu and Paraná river systems. The two places solve different trips.
Curitiba makes sense for city parks, architecture, museums, markets, and a separately planned trip toward Morretes, Antonina, Paranaguá, or the Campos Gerais. Foz makes sense for Parque Nacional do Iguaçu and other border-region institutions whose operations must be checked individually.
The mistake is to treat Curitiba as the hotel for everything in Paraná. It is not a practical base for a casual day visit to Foz. If both are important, they are two bases with an intercity journey between them.
Choose Curitiba for an eastern circuit
Start with one full city day. Group stops by district and decide whether the parks, historic center, museums, or urban design are the day's subject. The city is a useful arrival point, but an airport evening followed by an early departure is not the same as seeing Curitiba.
The next decision is whether to go east toward the Serra do Mar and coast or west toward the Campos Gerais. For an eastern excursion, confirm the exact service, departure point, luggage policy, and return on your date. If continuing to a coastal base, do not book a return product by accident. Weather and infrastructure conditions can affect the route, so keep the managing authority or operator's current notice with your reservation.
Curitiba is the stronger sole base when you have a short stay, fly through the metropolitan airport, and care more about the city and eastern half of the state than the falls.
Choose Foz for a park-led stay
Parque Nacional do Iguaçu is not an item to place between arrival and another long transfer. The ICMBio operational protocol governs visitor areas and points readers to the current official park management information. Use those channels for open areas, entry procedures, transport inside the visitor system, risk acknowledgements, and any route-specific rules.
Give the park a protected day. Do not put a nonreplaceable flight or intercity departure immediately after the planned exit. Water levels, weather, crowd management, temporary maintenance, and transport can change the shape of a visit even when the park remains open.
Foz also requires border awareness. A viewpoint or attraction within Brazil is a domestic outing. Crossing into Argentina or Paraguay is a different plan with current document, customs, transport, insurance, and return requirements. Verify those matters with the relevant authorities for the traveler's nationality and date. This article does not state an entry rule.
Stay in Foz when the falls are a primary reason for visiting Paraná, when you want a second locally based day, or when the onward route logically continues from the western part of the state.
Combine the cities without losing two days
Curitiba and Foz require separate transport searches, and the journey between them belongs in the schedule as an intercity transfer. Do not assume that a flight, bus, or road option will fit merely because both cities are in Paraná.
Compare three current options for the travel date:
- a direct domestic flight between the relevant airports;
- an authorized intercity bus with its actual terminals and luggage terms;
- a road journey only when the driver, overnight plan, vehicle, tolls, and stops are documented.
Record total door-to-door time, not the headline segment. Include checkout, terminal access, check-in, baggage, arrival transfer, and the chance that the new room is not yet available. An overnight bus also consumes recovery time even if it saves a hotel night on paper.
A workable combined trip usually gives each city at least one full day that is not also the transfer day. Add another day for any eastern excursion, second park experience, or cross-border plan. If that structure does not fit, choose one side of the state.

Recheck the park protocol and notices shortly before travel. Save the source date beside every time-sensitive decision. If a reservation vendor's wording conflicts with the managing authority, pause and resolve the conflict through official channels rather than guessing.
The best Paraná split has a visible purpose: Curitiba anchors an eastern circuit, while Foz anchors a western park stay. The transfer belongs in the itinerary as its own cost and risk.
